Where it all began

• The origins of the project date back to 1998, when the founding team began developing audio and video components and developer tools.
• In 2008, two key directions were launched: the TeamLab collaboration platform and a set of online document editors.
• TeamLab initially focused on internal communication tools and later expanded into a full platform including project management, CRM, and collaboration features.
• In 2009, Ascensio System SIA was formally registered in Latvia as the legal entity responsible for intellectual property.

The technological breakthrough

In 2012, at the CeBIT exhibition, ONLYOFFICE introduced world’s first online document editors based on HTML5 Canvas technology. Instead of relying on browser rendering engines, this technology draws documents pixel by pixel: like painting on a blank canvas. The result: your document looks identical whether you are viewing, editing, or printing it, regardless of the browser or device you use.

Becoming ONLYOFFICE

• In 2014, TeamLab was rebranded as ONLYOFFICE to reflect a stronger focus on office applications.
• The same year, ONLYOFFICE was released as an open-source product under a transparent development model.
• The project joined industry initiatives such as the Open Source Business Alliance (OSB Alliance) and the Linux Foundation.

Growth & first partnerships

• By 2014 together with our business partner Serge Seyfetdinov, we established an office branch in the United States.
• The product reached a level of maturity enabling broader market adoption and initial commercial success.
• In 2017, ONLYOFFICE established its first major integration partnership with ownCloud (Kiteworks). Integration connectors enabled seamless document editing within third-party platforms.
• Over time, our partner network has expanded significantly, and we now collaborate with 335 partners across nearly 100 countries worldwide.

Dividing business

• In 2019, the Russian business segment was separated into an independent entity as part of a strategic restructuring to sell it to Russian investors, while focusing on developing the international business as an open-source product.
• A fork of ONLYOFFICE was created specifically for the Russian market under the name R7-Office: named after the R-7 rocket that carried Yuri Gagarin on his first spaceflight – the first and only one idea of the product name had dramatically changed with time to a current interpretation spread in the web.
• The separation included a transfer of ownership to local investors and a full exit of ONLYOFFICE from the Russian market.
• A temporary support agreement between the parties remained in place until 2023.
• Since 2023, ONLYOFFICE and R7-Office operate as fully independent products with no shared codebase, ownership, or ongoing cooperation. Neither Lev Bannov nor any other ONLYOFFICE team member holds shares in R7-Office at present time.
• According to publicly available information, R7-Office is owned by private investors, with a minority stake acquired by VK Group in 2025.
• Since the separation, ONLYOFFICE has introduced features that R7-Office simply does not have: native mobile apps for iOS and Android, a full PDF editor, a redesigned interface, AI features, and a Diagram Viewer. The two products have diverged substantially.
