What we’re building for the next 16 years

As ONLYOFFICE celebrates its 16th anniversary, we’ve spent the past few weeks looking back in our series of stories: remembering the early days of SaaS, revisiting the moments that shaped our products, and talking about the people behind the code.

But anniversaries are also a good time to ask a different question: what comes next?

What we're building for the next 16 years

If the last sixteen years have taught us anything, it’s that predicting the future of technology is nearly impossible. Few people could have imagined cloud collaboration becoming the norm, or AI finding its way into almost every productivity tool. We don’t know exactly what office software will look like in 2042. But we do know what we’re building toward.

AI that works the way you do

AI is quickly becoming part of everyday work. People don’t just want an assistant that can generate text anymore. They expect AI to help them complete real tasks.

Today, users can generate and summarize text, translate content, explain formulas, create code, and configure custom AI assistants for recurring tasks directly inside the editors.

AI in ONLYOFFICE already supports a growing ecosystem of AI providers, including OpenAI, Mistral, Anthropic, Google Gemini, xAI, Ollama, DeepSeek, Together AI, Groq, and many others. Users can even connect their own local models and keep everything entirely on their own infrastructure.

What we're building for the next 16 years

We’re even more excited about where these capabilities are heading. We want AI to work directly with the content in your documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and forms, understand the context of what you’re working on, help structure information, and automate repetitive tasks. Over time, we see AI becoming a more natural part of the editing experience, seamlessly integrated into everyday workflows rather than existing as a standalone assistant.

In the years ahead, we see it becoming a real assistant for teamwork itself: helping organize collaborative spaces, finding information across files, managing knowledge, and making it easier to navigate growing collections of documents in ONLYOFFICE DocSpace.

We’re building an intelligent workspace where documents, data, and collaboration become easier to manage, while people remain in control of how AI works and which models power it.

Security and control by design

Security has always been one of the foundations of ONLYOFFICE. Over the years, we’ve introduced self-hosted deployment, end-to-end encryption, JWT support, granular access permissions, and open-source transparency that allows organizations to know exactly what they’re running.

And we’re continuing in the same direction. As collaboration becomes more distributed and organizations pay closer attention to data sovereignty, we believe people should have even more control over how and where their information is stored and processed. That’s why security will remain one of the key principles guiding the development of ONLYOFFICE in the years ahead.

What we're building for the next 16 years

Building a larger integration ecosystem

Documents don’t live in isolation. They move between CRM systems, learning platforms, customer portals, and countless business applications.

That’s why we’re continuing to invest in integration and developer tools. We want ONLYOFFICE to fit naturally into the software people already use every day, also giving developers the freedom to build entirely new experiences around documents and collaboration.

Today, ONLYOFFICE offers more than 40 ready-to-use connectors and more than 30 plugins, and the ecosystem continues to grow.

Coming next:

  • Miro
  • Slack
  • Bitbucket Cloud
  • Discourse
  • Directus
  • n8n

At the same time, our APIs and SDKs make it possible to embed not only the editors themselves but also DocSpace rooms and entire collaborative workspaces into third-party products and services.

The next sixteen years start with version 10.0

This autumn, ONLYOFFICE Docs 10.0 will bring together many of the ideas we’ve been talking about throughout this article. Discover the ONLYOFFICE roadmap on GitHub.

It’s the first glimpse of what we’re building for the next sixteen years: software that is more intelligent, more flexible, and better connected to the way people actually work.
