Sixteen years ago, ONLYOFFICE launched as TeamLab, an internal collaboration platform built to help teams communicate and work together more effectively. Education wasn’t the final objective, but technologies emerged over the years, and set the foundation for something much bigger. Today, schools, universities, educators, and students use ONLYOFFICE solutions to work together, manage learning materials, and create engaging digital learning experiences. Let’s look at how the journey unfolded.

Digital learning and what ONLYOFFICE has to do with it

From TeamLab to digital learning

Education has always been about people. Teachers share knowledge, students ask questions, and communities learn together. What has changed through the years is not the purpose of education, but the way it happens.

When TeamLab began in 2009, cloud-based collaboration was coming to light, LMS were simpler, and co-time editing was far from becoming a standardized way of education. What started as a tool for teamwork has evolved into a comprehensive ecosystem that gives value to educational institutions embracing digital learning.

2018: Expanding collaboration through cloud integrations

As cloud-based collaboration continued to grow, ONLYOFFICE reached another milestone in 2018 through its partnership with ownCloud. By integrating ONLYOFFICE Docs with ownCloud, users could create, edit, and collaborate on office documents directly within their secure cloud storage environment, combining file management with real-time document editing.

This integration also opened new opportunities for education. An example for this is the ByCS-Drive project, part of the Bavarian school cloud initiative, which uses ownCloud together with ONLYOFFICE Docs to provide millions of students and teachers with a secure, scalable platform for collaboration and digital learning.

Schools in Donaueschingen use ONLYOFFICE to simplify document management and improve collaboration among teachers and students, making everyday educational workflows more organized and efficient.

2020: Moodle integration

As Moodle became one of the world’s leading learning management systems, ONLYOFFICE expanded its support for digital education through seamless integration.

In 2020, users could connect ONLYOFFICE Docs to Moodle using a third-party integration. This allowed educators and students to create, edit, and collaborate on documents directly within their courses. This marked the first step by ONLYOFFICE towards supporting digital learning through LMS.

2022: The first Moodle connector

In 2022, ONLYOFFICE released its first official ONLYOFFICE Docs connector for Moodle, making integration easier and providing a seamless document editing experience within the LMS. Educators could manage course materials and assignments more efficiently, while students could collaborate on documents without leaving Moodle.

2023: Plugin for Moodle

Building on the official connector, ONLYOFFICE introduced the ONLYOFFICE Assign Submission plugin for Moodle in 2023. The plugin allows students to create and edit office documents directly while completing assignment submissions, removing the need to download files or switch between applications. Educators can simplify the assessment process by keeping document creation, submission, and review within the Moodle environment.

By enabling collaborative document editing directly within its LMS, the school made it easier for teachers and students to work together, access learning materials, and manage academic activities more effectively.

2020: Supporting collaborative communities with HumHub

The HumHub integration brings collaborative document editing into social learning and community platforms, making it easier for teachers, students, and administrators to work together in one shared environment.

A good example is Soziale Bildung e.V., a German non-profit organization that uses ONLYOFFICE Docs with HumHub to streamline teamwork, improve document collaboration, and simplify internal communication across its projects.

2020: Supporting education with ONLYOFFICE Workspace

As digital learning platforms continued to progress, ONLYOFFICE Workspace became a complete strategy to support document sharing and collaborative work across its academic network. Combining document management, real-time collaboration, communication, and productivity tools, Workspace enables educators, students, and administrative teams to work together more efficiently from a single platform.

An example of this is EUNICE, an association of ten European universities, adopted ONLYOFFICE Workspace to support document sharing and collaborative work across its academic network. The EUNICE project demonstrates how ONLYOFFICE Workspace supports modern education by helping institutions build connected, collaborative, and scalable digital learning environments.

2020: Enhancing learning with OpenOlat

With OpenOlat integration, educators can manage learning materials and collaborate on documents without leaving the platform, creating a smoother digital learning experience.

ONLYOFFICE provides a centralized platform for co-editing and knowledge exchange, helping researchers, educators, and administrative teams work effectively across different locations.

2021: Expanding digital learning with Chamilo

ONLYOFFICE Docs integrates with Chamilo, allowing educators and students to create, edit, and collaborate on documents directly within their courses, reducing the need for external tools.

University Grenoble Alpes adopted ONLYOFFICE to improve document management and collaboration across its campuses following the merger of three universities. By using Chamilo, the platform enables students, teachers, and researchers to collaborate efficiently through integrations with systems such as Moodle, Chamilo, and Alfresco.

2021: Bringing collaborative editing to WebWeaver

ONLYOFFICE Docs integrates with WebWeaver to support collaborative document editing, helping schools simplify coursework and improve communication between teachers and students.

In addition, ONLYOFFICE Docs is also available through connectors for platforms such as NEO and ONE, extending collaborative document editing to even more educational ecosystems.

2023: Building collaborative learning spaces with ONLYOFFICE DocSpace

ONLYOFFICE DocSpace was launched in 2023, designed with a simple idea: learning thrives when people can connect, collaborate, and learn from one another rather than work alone. Educators can organize and share teaching resources, assignments, and presentations in a secure, permission-based digital workspace, while students can access learning materials, collaborate on projects in real time, and receive instant feedback directly within documents. By combining document management and collaboration on a single platform, DocSpace helps create more connected and engaging digital learning environments.

ARK Academy uses ONLYOFFICE DocSpace to support its homeschooling model. They provided dedicated collaborative spaces for teachers, students, and parents. This helped them organize learning resources, make communication easier, and create a more structured digital learning experience while maintaining costs.

2023: Introducing AI to the ONLYOFFICE ecosystem

The evolution of ONLYOFFICE didn’t stop with collaboration and document management. In the same year, ONLYOFFICE introduced its first AI integration through the ChatGPT plugin. Since then, the platform has continued to expand its AI capabilities like OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, DeepSeek, and locally hosted solutions via platforms such as GPT4All and Ollama. AI helps educators and students summarize learning materials, translate content, generate ideas, extract key information, and automate repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus more on teaching, learning, and critical thinking.

As digital learning continues to evolve, AI marks another milestone in ONLYOFFICE’s journey from TeamLab to a comprehensive ecosystem that supports modern education.

2025: DocSpace Plugin for Moodle

In 2025, ONLYOFFICE further expanded its Moodle ecosystem with the DocSpace plugin for Moodle. Unlike the document editing plugins, this integration allows educators to embed entire DocSpace rooms into Moodle courses, creating dedicated spaces where learning materials, multimedia content, and collaborative documents can be managed in one place. With this, educators can organize collaborative workspaces, while students can access resources, complete assignments, and work together within a single learning environment.
