16+ countries, one team

When we look back at sixteen years of ONLYOFFICE, it’s tempting to tell the story through first editors, product releases, major milestones, features, and partners. But at some point, every anniversary story arrives at the same conclusion: products don’t grow by themselves, but people do.

Today, we’d like to focus on the people behind the product: colleagues, interns, and contributors working from different corners of the world, connected by a product they build together every day.

How many countries are we really talking about?

If we only count our offices, the answer is easy: eight.

• Belgrade, Serbia
• Shanghai, China

Each of these locations has its own role in the company. Our development hub is based in Uzbekistan, our customer care team works from Armenia, and our sales and business teams are spread across several offices.

But the number eight is not the right answer.

ONLYOFFICE has embraced remote work for years, allowing us to build a truly international team and welcome talented people regardless of geography. At the same time, it gave our teammates the freedom to work from wherever they feel most comfortable and productive. That’s how our CEO, Lev Bannov, works from Turkey, and how colleagues from France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, India, Vietnam, Moldova, Montenegro, South Korea, Japan, and several other countries became part of the company.

When you put all the dots on the map together, the picture becomes much bigger. In total, the people behind ONLYOFFICE now represent 24 countries.

We may work from different cities, speak different native languages, and start our days in different time zones. Still, we’re all building the same product, solving the same problems, and moving in the same direction, but the feeling remains the same: we’re still one team, just spread across more of the world.

Catching fact: Behind the release notes, bug fixes, and product updates, our team includes a saxophonist, a cellist, a dancer, a singer, four guitarists, and five rock band members. We also have runners, volleyball players, hockey players, hikers, and bodybuilders who never miss a chance to take on a new sporting challenge.

The map keeps growing

Even 24 countries don’t tell the whole story.

In 2024, we launched the internship program to give people an opportunity to become part of the ONLYOFFICE team. The program is fully remote, which means geography is no longer a barrier for those seeking experience in an international tech environment.

Since its launch, more than 30 interns have completed the program, joining us from countries including Algeria, the UAE, Serbia, Brazil, India, Nepal, China, and Greece. Some of them were just starting their professional journey, while others were looking to expand their experience by working on a global open-source product.

Several interns later received job offers and continued their journey with ONLYOFFICE. But beyond the numbers, the program has become another way to bring new perspectives, ideas, and talents into the team.

Together with our internship program, the geography of ONLYOFFICE now reaches 32 countries.

The team beyond the team

But the real number is impossible to calculate. Over the years, hundreds of people who were never employees or interns have helped shape ONLYOFFICE in their own way.

One of the earliest examples of this dates back to 2011, when we opened a space for community members who wanted to contribute translations. The idea was simple: if someone wanted to use ONLYOFFICE in their native language, they could help make it happen.

Today, ONLYOFFICE is available in 45 languages thanks in large part to a community that has grown from just 56 contributors to 438 and counting.

It’s one of our favorite examples of how open-source projects grow. Someone contributes a few strings because they need the product in their own language. Then another person joins, and another. Years later, millions of users can work in their native language because hundreds of people, scattered across the world, decided to contribute something small.

So, how many countries are we really talking about? We honestly don’t know anymore. And that’s probably the best answer we could have hoped for.
