ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors on Guará Linux: the default office suite for 22.000 employees of the Military Police of Minas Gerais
In this article, you will learn about Guará Linux, a new Ubuntu-based distribution developed for the needs of the Military Police of Minas Gerais, one of the largest states of Brazil. One of the peculiarities of the new OS is that it features ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors as the default office suite. Keep reading to discover more details.
About Guará Linux
Guará Linux is a distribution created to meet the specific demands of the Military Police of Minas Gerais. Basically, it’s Ubuntu 22.04 with a more “Windows-like” interface and a series of manual adjustments to make the OS function seamlessly within the state network. Guará Linux is designed to serve about 22.000 workstations across the state, bringing more security and savings to the public budget.
Guará Linux is going to be used by all employees of the Military Police of Minas Gerais, providing them with all the required tools to perform their duties, including an application for secure remote desktop access. Ease of use, security and modern look are the main pillars of the Guará Linux project.
The system is not meant to be used outside the organization it was created for, as most programs and tweaks would not make sense on other networks. However, the developers have plans to open up the code of their own applications they develop especially for Guará Linux.
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors, the default office suite
For office tasks and document editing, Guará Linux offers ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors as the default office suite, so users don’t need to install anything and can run the ONLYOFFICE application directly from the menu by clicking on its icon.
Using ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors, Guará Linux users can:
- Open, edit and save text documents, spreadsheets and presentations;
- Create and fill out PDF forms, using ready-to-use free templates from the ONLYOFFICE library;
- Annotate and edit PDF files;
- Use third-party plugins to get access to new features and tools, such DeepL for translation and Jitsi for video conferencing;
- Connect their ONLYOFFICE DocSpace, Nextcloud, Seafile, ownCloud, Liferay, kDrive or Moodle account for real-time collaboration;
- Sign documents with digital signatures and more.
Benjamim Góis, the developer of Guará Linux, says:
We chose ONLYOFFICE due to the similarity of its interface with modern versions of MS Office since it is a GUI that most users are familiar with. Also, we noticed slightly better compatibility than LibreOffice with documents created in MS Office, which is still the main document format in the organization. The only disadvantage we found was the fact that Ubuntu provides an installer via Snap, which is a little slower to run. We also had problems starting ONLYOFFICE when the machine joins a network domain, which requires the app to be reinstalled. We are still in the first few months of our migration to Linux and ONLYOFFICE, and we will certainly have more feedback in the future.
