How to Connect ONLYOFFICE Online Editors to Nextcloud?

14 March 2017 By Tati 7 2,505

Hello, everyone!

We are glad to announce that our developers have updated the ONLYOFFICE app for ownCloud and from now on any Nextcloud user can use it to integrate our full-featured online editors with Nextcloud for document editing and collaboration.

Today we will learn how to do it in 3 easy steps.

What we will need before going ahead:
  • ONLYOFFICE Document Server v.4.2 or later. You can install it using Docker, .deb or .rpm packages.
  • Nextcloud v.11.0.2 or later.
  • ownCloud/Nextcloud ONLYOFFICE integration app. The application is already available in the Nextcloud App Store. It is distributed under AGPL v.3 with the source code listed on GitHub.
How to proceed

Step 1. Download the ownCloud/Nextcloud ONLYOFFICE integration app from GitHub and place it to your Nextcloud server into the /apps directory.

    cd apps/
    git clone onlyoffice

Step 2. Open Nextcloud. Go to Apps >> Not Enabled >> ONLYOFFICE and click the Enable button.

Step 3. Go to the Nextcloud Admin panel. Scroll down to the ONLYOFFICE section and enter your document server address. Save the changes.

ONLYOFFICE Nextcloud_2

That is all. Now you can create new text documents, online excel sheets, and presentations and edit them using ONLYOFFICE online editors.

We have Onlyoffice document server integration working with Nextcloud (each running on their own server). I am noticing a couple of things and hoping that you can comment:
    1. Onlyoffice is relatively slow to open documents. The “loading circle” is displayed for at least 5 seconds before the document is displayed (small document with a single user). The Onlyoffice document server is running on an Intel core i5 computer with 8GB memory and SSD. Is there any performance tuning that will decrease the time required to open a document?
    2. It is not possible to view office documents in Nextcloud folders that are read-only. Clicking on the file in Nextcloud only results in downloading the document, there’s no option to view the document. Are there plans to allow for viewing office documents in read-only shares, similar to how PDF documents are displayed?

We are using onlyoffice with nextcloud and we like – no we love – it.

Now I’ve installed Onlyoffice Desktop Editors and woundered, why I can’t open documents from nextcloud. Only from onlyoffice portals?

Questions: How to Connect ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors to Nextcloud?

    Thanks for an advice…

So, could the document server be at the same machine as the nextcloud runs on?

      Hello Vlad,

ONLYOFFICE Document Server and Nextcloud must be installed on different computers, otherwise, problems might occur and no correct connector work can be guaranteed.

Great article. I use as a cloud hosting service. I use it because it comes from Germany and therefore has a very high level of data protection. Also, it is very pries worth and works reliably.
