ONLYOFFICE Document Server is now available as a snap

29 October 2019 By Ksenija 6 2,978

Great news everyone!

From now on you can easily install ONLYOFFICE Document Server as a snap package. Read this post to learn more.

What actually is snap and its advantages

Snap is a universal package that is available for any Linux OS running snapd: Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Gentoo, Arch Linux, Fedora, OpenWrt, OpenEmbedded, Yocto, openSUSE, Manjaro, Solus, etc.

What’s more, snaps work on various Linux distributions without modification, since they already contain all the necessary dependencies.

Snaps are:

  • quick to install with a single command;
  • easy to refresh, as the snapd system uses automatic and transactional updates;
  • safe to run because they are separated from the operating system, other applications, and hardware functions.
How to install

After the testing phase we promoted ONLYOFFICE Document Server snap to the stable channel with the latest version 5.4 available.

To install it from the command line, just run the following command:

# snap install onlyoffice-ds

Our new snap is also available on the Snapcraft Store. Any additional details you might need can be found on GitHub.

A quick reminder: You can also install ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors via snap. Check it on the Snapcraft Store.

        I’m presuming this snap needs a reverse proxy for nextcloud onlyoffice app as does not connect?

    Unfortunately, installing from snap renders Onlyoffice incapable of accessing files from directories and drives other than the directory where Onlyoffice is actually installed. This makes it fairly useless for me.

    Is there any way to give Onlyoffice permissions to browse outside of it’s installed location?
